Local Triumph for Women's Campaign in International Women's Week

REACTING TO SMACK

The University of Warwick Students’ Union have put pressure on Leamington nightclub Smack to change their event “Smack my bitch up”. The event promoters recently bowed to pressure during International Women’s Week to pull an event which the Union considered to be glorifying both drug use and violence against women.

Brian Duggan, President, University of Warwick Students’ Union, said:

“This is a real victory for public pressure and local voices. It just goes to show how much involvement and participation can bring positive change. There is so much that a Union can do to stand up for students issues and I’m proud of all our students who took a stand against this apparent glorification of violence against women.”

Amy Slater, Women’s Officer for the Students’ Union said,

“I come from a union that takes a strong stance on women’s issues. And I am proud to have been part of a campaign that has brought positive change to our local community.”

The Students’ Union wrote to Leamington MP James Plaskitt and held a public meeting entitled “React to Smack”. The Union understands that Smack nightclub has now pulled the event after one night and is now in the process of rebranding.
