Stop Violence Against Women!
NB: If you are worried about someone knowing you have visited this web article, please click here
Violence against women is a global crisis situation – and it may surprise some people to learn that it is a crisis in the UK too. 45% of women in the UK will experience some form of domestic violence, rape, sexual assault, or stalking at the hands of men. This figure is almost unbelievable and when sexual harassment is thrown in the figure pretty much includes all women.
The government and society in general must do more to end violence against women in the UK and in the world.
WHAT CAN WE DO?
Reclaim the Night March 25 November 2006
Claire Anderson, NUS LGBT Officer (Women's Place) and Kat Stark, NUS Women's Officer reclaim the night!
NUS women against violence - another reclaim the night placard
NUS Women’s Campaign supported the London Reclaim the Night March, called by the London Feminist Network, as our key Stop Violence Against Women event this year. There were about 1000 women there, marching to reclaim the night as a safe space for women, including a strong student contingent.

Your own actions
Here are a few ideas of what you could do to End Violence Against Women on your campus:
- Get a massive banner with ‘These hands don’t hurt women’ in the middle and get men to commit to ending VAW by putting their handprint on there
- Run a local petition to your MP asking them to support an Integrated Government Strategy to Combat Violence Against Women. Go to Fawcett Society or Amnesty International for more details
- Raise money for your local Refuge centre and make a big deal of it on campus
- Run your own Reclaim the Night march on campus
- Hold a vigil to remember women who have died or have been attacked – involve musical and theatrical societies in this event
