Reclaim the Night National March

If you are worried about someone knowing that you have visited this web article, click here

25 November 2006, London

NUS Women’s Campaign is wholly supporting the Reclaim the Night March in London on 25 November! Called by the London Feminist Network, the demo is an opportunity to take a real stand against violence against women and rape. The march is women only, with a mixed rally at ULU afterwards with speakers, drinks, music, and heaters!

Assemble 6pm Trafalgar Square (next to Nelson's Column)

Violence against women in all forms all over the world is beyond crisis point. The only real difference around the world is the ways in which violence is perpetrated on women by men; the levels of violence remain pretty much the same continent to continent.

In the UK there are more than 47,000 rapes each year (British Crime Survey) whilst over 300,000 women are sexually assaulted (BCS). In the workplace the EOC estimate that just over half of all women who work have been sexually harassed at work. 1 in 4 women experience domestic violence in their lives. The list goes on and on. Male violence against women must end.

The march is women only because we are clear that we are marching against specifically gendered violence and it’s so empowering to march in a women only environment! Men are welcome at ULU afterwards for the rally though!

It’s also important to raise the issue of where violence happens! Many women go to extreme lengths to avoid the streets they live and work in at night for fear of being attacked in some way. When around 92% of rapes in the UK are perpetrated by people the victim personally knows, and domestic violence rates are at soaring levels, it’s clear that the night and strangers are not the only (or even the key) danger to women.

NUS Women’s Campaign is committed to building for this demonstration and if you are planning on coming along we need to hear about it!

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

You only need to do 1 thing….

BRING A DELEGATION OF WOMEN FROM YOUR COLLEGE OR UNI TO THE DEMO!

To help you, the National Women’s Officer can send you some flyers that you can use to mobilise for your delegation. To order flyers email women@nus.org.uk, giving us your name, address, and how many flyers you want!
