Dignity. Period! Speaker Tour

NUS Women’s Campaign supports the Dignity. Period campaign, organised by Action for Southern Africa (Actsa). The campaign is about helping women in Zimbabwe reclaim their dignity.

In the UK women buy more than 3 billion disposable sanitary products each year. But millions of women in Zimbabwe go without these basic products and the results are disastrous. Infection, depression, not being able to go to school or to work, are just some of the repercussions of this situation. There have also been examples of women being beaten by their husbands who wrongly attribute their infection to infidelity.

The inspirational Thabitha Khumalo (keynote speaker at Women’s Conference 2006) from the Zimbabwean Congress of Trade Unions said:

“Ordinary women cannot afford sanitary wear. We are inserting old pieces of cloth or newspapers, but the ink from the newspapers is causing infections, and there is no medication to cure this. It’s immoral for the leadership to deny us our biological rights.”

What are we doing about it?

Tabitha Khumalo

The campaign will launch mid October, with a speaker tour of Students’ Union with Thabitha Khumalo herself.

If you are interested in Thabitha speaking at your Union (limited places left!) email women@nus.org.uk

The tour takes place from 16-21 October 2006.

NUS and Actsa will take care of expenses, and all you need to do is fill a room!
