Just the Job Event

On 16 February 2006, NUS Women’s Campaign and the TUC held an event for student officers and activists entitled “Just the Job?” The event gave participants the opportunity to learn more about the issues facing women at work, including the gender pay gap, part-time workers’ rights and sexual harassment, with a session on campaign planning. This event also provided an opportunity to discuss how students’ unions and trade unions can work together to tackle these issues.

Speakers were:

  • Jo Salmon (NUS National Women’s Officer, 2004-2006)
  • Rebecca Gill (Policy Officer, Women’s Equality, TUC)
  • Raj Jethwa (Policy Officer, Young People, TUC)
  • Krupa Raithaitha (USDAW) Student Employment Project, UCLAN
  • Jenny Duncan (NUS Scotland Women’s Officer)
  • Jenna Khalfan (NATFHE)

Some campaign and project ideas for women’s officers that came out of the day were:
  • Make links between the students’ union and the trade union reps at your college or university
  • Organise stalls in your college or university giving out information about joining a trade union to students who work as well as study – make sure the stall contains information about why this is crucial for women, who can often face unfair pay and sexual harassment in the workplace
  • Organise an advice shop/drop in service where students can talk to union reps and find out more about trade unionism
  • Make sure that there is a trade union presence at careers fayres – contact the organiser of careers fayres at your college or university about this
  • See if your women’s campaign can have a presence at any careers fayres at your university or college, with a stall providing information about rights at work and trade unions
  • Include information about trade unions on the union web site/web page – link to www.morethanwork.net, the web site for working students
  • At the bottom of adverts on job boards, you could make a suggestion of which trade unions the successful applicant could join
  • Organise a mock “15% off sale” [representing the gender pay gap for graduates] – with a “shop window” with 15% cut off clothes and other items displayed, with information about the current gender pay gap
Many thanks to all who participated and to the TUC for hosting the event.
