About the Liberation Department

The liberation department supports the work of NUS' Women's and LGBT campaigns.

We offer support and development opportunities to LGBT and Women's Officers and facilitate networking and development of women's and LGBT groups across the country.

How we do it? Working together: achieving the best results

  • We produce briefings, campaign publications and awareness raising materials for use in students’ unions.
  • We carry out research into issues affecting women and LGBT students and support the work of National Women's Officer and the National LGBT Officers.
  • Recent campaigns include Access All Areas, Pro-Choice and Proud of it and Just the Job?
  • We support the work of women’s and LGBT officers and groups locally through producing handbooks and awareness raising publicity materials and offering advice and support.
  • We work with external organisations such as Stonewall, the Equal Opportunities Commission and Refuge to ensure the views of women and LGBT students are heard.
  • We lobby the government for changes in legislation that affect women and LGBT students. Recently we have produced responses to the Discrimination in Goods and Services and Equalities Review consultation papers.
  • We organise events to support women’s and LGBT groups including Women’s Officer Network Days and LGBT Caucus Days such as Disabled LGBT Day.
  • We work on cross-liberation campaign events such as Liberation 2006 and Lesbian, Bisexual and Trans Women’s Day.

Officers that we help and support on a regular basis:

Welfare Officers, Women’s Officers, LGBT Officers and Equal Opportunities Officers
