What we do

Membership Development is responsible for designing, delivering and evaluating a wide range of learning and development initiatives throughout the year and every students’ union/association affiliated to NUS is welcome to join in.

We aim to offer a training experience that is inclusive of each individual’s learning style to ensure maximum learning for all. Within each training course, we offer varied activities that allow participants to absorb information in their own way and then apply their learning to real life scenarios. So whether you like to listen, absorb and discuss information, reflect and think through ideas, or participate in a hands-on learning experience, there will be something for you at all of our courses. We also include time to review and reflect upon what you have learned in order to aid long-term retention and to help you to prepare for your year ahead. The department is responsible for creating and delivering a wide range of learning and development initiatives to officers including:

  • NUS summer national training programme designed for newly elected HE officers. The main time for delivering training is from July to September - with more than 500 officers taking part annually.
  • Each year we develop and run FE training events including FE student governors, which is run in conjunction with the Association of Colleges, and FE student leadership
  • We also work within and alongside the NUS regional teams through involvement in the development and delivery of training programmes including in-house training and regional events
  • Exploring and running accreditation programmes so that individual recognition for training can be gained

We work closely with AMSU and NUSSL to broaden our training remit and now deliver the following programmes to staff and volunteers within students’ unions:

  • Train the trainer:
A two-day introductory course for all union staff who have a training or coaching element within their job description.

    Further details: www.amsu.net
  • Advanced train the trainer
This two-day training programme is aimed at staff who regularly deliver training sessions for groups of staff, officers or students and would like to further develop their own training styles and the range of techniques they utilise.

    Further details: www.amsu.net
  • ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management) Introductory certificate in management

NUS are offering the ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management) introductory certificate in management to AMSU members.

The ILM qualification is a really helpful tool for those starting a supervisory or managerial post or those who wish to progress to a more senior position. It is well recognised in the public and private sector.

Further details/dates: www.amsu.net

  • NUSSL board and committees – induction and skills development
  • Working with individual unions to develop tailored in-house training programmes

Internally within NUS, we support the staff and NEC training programme and work closely with departments to design training events and develop materials.

The training programmes offered are one of the few services that members pay for in addition to their affiliation fee. The programmes are run on a break-even basis whereby the cost of attending the training course will cover the incurred expenditure from running it. This includes venue hire, all training documentation including workbooks, handouts and all resources required to complete the course, accreditation submission costs (where applicable), travel for external speakers to attend and run sessions and full board and en-suite accommodation for residential events.

Check the Calendar of events for current training courses.
