Herts students' union defeats curfew
A mixture of good old fashioned picketing and modern online protesting has led to Herts University Students' Union successfully removing a curfew imposed by the university's vice chancellor.
The campus-wide curfew was imposed after a 20 year old man was stabbed outside the university on 13 February.
The union argued that a curfew for 24,000 students was not an effective form of protection and was actually penalising the majority of students.
To protest against the situation, students bombarded the Vice Chancellor's blog with comments and formed facebook groups dedicated to a lifting of the curfew. The union suspended its website for three days and replaced it with a message from the executive. There was a demonstration on Friday 15 February outside the VC's office at which 350 students made their feelings heard. There was an open meeting with the VC this week (Monday 18 February) after which the VP lifted the curfew.
