Students team up to beat bigotry
Students kick racism out of football
Students across the country have taken part in a series of football matches today (Wednesday 19 October) as a symbol of solidarity against racism.
Students’ unions have arranged matches as part of their weekly BUSA fixtures to coincide with football’s anti-racism campaign Kick It Out week of action (13-25 October). NUS officers will also be showing their support for the campaign by holding their own match during a training event for students’ union liberation officers.
Gemma Tumelty, NUS National Secretary, said: “It is great to see students getting involved in this national campaign and showing their commitment to equality and diversity in sport and all other student activities.”
Pav Akthar, NUS Black Students’ Officer and co-convenor of NUS anti-racism and anti-fascism campaign said: “There has been a massive increase in racist attacks since 7/7 so it is vitally important we stamp out racism wherever it occurs. I’d like to thank the FA for such an excellent initiative and applaud students’ unions for promoting it to their community.”
Ash Fuller of Worcester University, one of many students’ unions hosting Kick It Out events today, said: “I was personally disgusted at the racism evident in last year’s England v Spain match and wanted to speak out against it along with many other people. Hopefully today’s events will send out a message that racism in sport, or anywhere else in society, will not be tolerated.”
