Blogged by: Richard Budden on 05/02/2009 Activism and the Activist AcademyJust because someone doesn’t sit on your union council does not mean they aren’t passionate and don’t want to be leading your campaigns – the chances are that we as unions have not connected with them properly. Indicative fees for constituent membersAdded on 22/05/2009 Delegates to Annual Conference 2009 approved CD7, which outlines the budget for NUS for the year ahead, and the Finance Committee's report, which detailed the methodology for the calculation of affiliation fees for 2009/10. Read more about Indicative 2009/10 Fees for Constituent Members We will shortly be writing formally to every constituent member advising them of their individual fee for the year ahead. At which point we will also be requesting member unions to provide copies of their audited accounts or some other independent confirmation from their institution of their block grant/subvention for 2007/8 financial year. Invoices will be sent to each constituent member in August. For those unions on Central Billing, as per previous years, your affiliation fee will be collected as follows:>/p>
Students' Unions not on central Billing will be provided with details concerning the arrangement of Direct Debit payment. Further Questions? Any specific questions relating to the 2009/10 indicative figure for your union should in the first instance be directed to Brenda Scott, NUS Affiliation Fees Co-ordinator at brenda.scott@nus.org.uk Students' union incorporationAdded on 14/04/2009 While most students' unions in the UK are unincorporated organisations, some have incorporated and others are looking at doing so. Incorporation has some benefits, though it also requires specific pieces of work to be done to deal with the movement of assets, pensions implications and also a number of operational matters to be addressed. You do not need to incorporate to register as a charity. This page includes documents and guidance to help you through this process, though you should also seek individual legal advice. Student communicationsAdded on 28/04/2009 The University of Leeds is carrying out a survey to find out more about how students use communication technologies to engage with the world around them. The results from the survey will help unions and other organisations communicate with students. The information will also help NUS’ work on e-democracy - student opinions will help to contribute to important policy proposals. The survey should only take 15 minutes to complete and students will have the chance to win an i-Pod. Please pass the survey on to all your students. SUEI Award winnersAdded on 03/04/2009 Three SUEI Awards were conferred at a recent SUEI Advisory Panel held on 19 March 2009. Congratulations to officers and staff at Bedfordshire, De Montfort and York St John students' unions, who all achieved a bronze award. A total of eight students' unions have now received SUEI awards, with another 40 unions working towards it.
