Sudan: Help prevent civil war
Urgent action must be taken now by the international community to protect civilians during this turbulent period in Sudan. NUS was involved in a global day of action on 9 January to warn that an all-out conflict threatens to return to Sudan. The day of action took place exactly one year out from a referendum that will decide the date of Sudan as the Southern region votes on whether to secede from the North. The global day of action launches a campaign for peace in Susan that will last throughout the countdown to the referendum in 2010.
Organisations involved in the campaign include Amnesty International, Christian Aid, Save Darfur, Human Rights Watch, Enough, Aegis Trust, Federation de droits de homes (FIDH) among others.
The information below is to raise awareness of the problem in Sudan, and specifically to draw attention to the lack of joined-up, co-ordinated thinking that is currently making war/humanitarian disaster more likely in the run-up to and after the referendum.
