Protect Darfur: Campaign resources
Following the strong presence of students and members of NUS at the national Day for Darfur demonstration in September, we are talking on the message of the day: ‘Don’t Look Away Now’. Although the British government have made significant pledges regarding aid support for the UN Peacekeeping force that is due to be deployed to the region in December, it is crucial that civil society does not let the issue fall off the agenda. It is imperative that the commitments made at the United Nations Security Council are honoured and a UN/AU hybrid peacekeeping is deployed to Darfur by the deadline.
NUS will be amongst those ensuring that this issue remains on the agenda. We are encouraging students' unions to lead on this campaign locally; there are a number of ways of doing this. Whether this is through lobbying your university to divest any shares it holds, that may be indirectly funding the Sudanese Government or simply lobby your MP and campaigning to raise awareness.
