Switch Off in Go Green week

There are loads of ways to visibly reduce energy consumption and waste during Go Green Week, and get people into the habit of switching off.

Student Switch Off is an energy-saving competition between Halls of Residence.

Halls within each University compete against each other to reduce their energy usage from the baseline year. Prizes are given out during the year to reward individuals and halls for their hard work, and students upload photos to demonstrate their energy saving ways.

NUS and Student Switch Off run a number of competitions at Universities up and down the country, and this year Student Switch Off became part of NUS’ wider Degrees Cooler programme (link to the Degrees Cooler page). Student Switch Off recruits student volunteers on campus to help co-ordinate competitions and events.

These Eco-Power Rangers have been busy over the last term getting students involved and since September they have signed up 6181 students, 15.3% of all those in halls in the participating Universities.

Working in the following Degrees Cooler Universities, Student Switch has managed to achieve the following savings, demonstrating that even small actions can have a massive impact on energy efficiency;

  • Birmingham – 9.5% reduction – 98 tonnes of CO2
  • Bristol – 7.7% reduction – 75 tonnes of CO2
  • DMU – 6.6% reduction – 8 tonnes of CO2
  • LSE – 10.8% reduction – 88 tonnes of CO2
  • London South Bank – 7.9% reduction - 32 tonnes of CO2
  • MMU – 6.5% reduction – 46 tonnes of CO2
  • Sheffield – 9.1% - 29tonnes of CO2
  • UEA – 8.5% reduction – 50 tonnes of CO2
  • Warwick – 8.8% - 158 tonnes of CO2
  • Worcester – 14.5% reduction – 4 tonnes of CO2
  • Total – Average 8.7% - 572 tonnes of CO2
