Votes at 16: Want to appear in the papers?
NUS needs your help in finding 16 and 17 year olds who can act as case studies for a newspaper article on Votes at 16.
Why are we doing this?
Earlier this summer the Youth Citizenship Commission announced the findings of the consultation on youth citizenship, and the issue of Votes at 16. You can read more here.
Whilst the commission made several recommendations which were welcomed, disappointedly the issue of Votes at 16 has been referred back to the political parties.
Need for public pressure
Therefore NUS wishes to generate some public debate, and dispel the myth that young people are not mature enough to vote. We are going to approach a number of the Sunday newspapers to run a article on reform of the voting age, and in order to do this we need some really powerful case studies which demonstrate the real diversity and maturity of young people in Britain today.
How can you be involved?
- I need your help in finding willing students who will act as case studies
- I need you to think of one or two students at your college, or someone you just happen to know aged either 16 or 17
- These people would ideally be able to articulate why they are in favour of votes at 16 but ideally be a student not a students' union officer.
- I need a range of profiles.
So do you know anyone who is;
- an apprentice;
- carers;
- mother or father;
- a solider, RAF, or Navy trainee;
- people who volunteer in their local community;
- someone who has started up their own business;
- a budding sportsman or women.
Basically I am looking for a real diverse range of backgrounds, career choices and current responsibilities.
Once you have thought of someone, can you please approach them and ask if they would be happy to participate in this, to assist our campaign to get votes at 16. If they are willing to participate please get them to fill out the reply form here.
