Social Space/Communal Areas

Stadia

“ Our University campus lacks any communal/social spaces where students can meet informally to talk, eat and generally socialise in a relaxed way. There is of course the SU Bar and the University provides a refectory, but there is no communal space which is not centred around food or alcohol. I am keen to establish whether your institution provides a social/communal space on campus. I hope your feedback will allow me to apply some pressure to the University about what other institutions provide!” Dawn Easy, Anglia Ruskin Students’ Union

“Can I also have any replies to this sent to me? Lack of 'informal' social space is a big issue on campus at the moment although space generally is a big problem with lecture theatres etc being totally over subscribed.” Jess Saunders; University of Bath Students’ Union

“Not sure if this helps as we are an FE college but we have two social areas between our six sites which are across the city. We need more, one in every centre ideally.” Alison Cottenham; Liverpool Community College

Nightline

“ Right now, we have 'suspended' the service until we go though a formal review process, and I am in the procedure of collecting info about how other Nighlines run to present to the group. We had great difficulty in the past and struggled to develop a relationship where we could work closely with the volunteers. We were also aware that they had trouble recruiting members; resulting in nightline only being open for 3 nights a week.” Gabriella Sholk

“We have a very sucessful nightline system here at Lancaster, we've also launched an e-listening service. There is a good relationship between nightline and the students union. There is a lot more information on the website www.lusu.co.uk/nightline and you can contact the admin people who run it for more detailed information from there...they're the experts!” Becky Heard; Lancaster University Students’ Union
