Discrimination in Goods and Services Consultation

Following campaigning from all sectors of the LGBT community including NUS LGBT Campaign, as well as individual students and students' unions, the Government accepted an amendment to the Equality Bill in November of last year which gave the Government powers to ban discrimination in goods and services on the grounds of sexual orientation.

Subsequently they released a consultation document entitled: "Getting Equal: Proposals to Outlaw Sexual Orientation Discrimination in the Provision of Goods and Services" which sought to to establish how the regulations around this area of law will work in practice, and especially with respect to issues such as religious exemptions and education provision.

The NUS LGBT Campaign's response to the consultation is here. The laws come into effect in October.
