Equalities Review Interim Report - NUS Response

NUS replied to the original call for evidence from the Equalities Review – our original response (due to our membership being based in these areas) focused mainly on equality issues within further and higher education and dealt with separately the opinions of all four autonomous liberation campaigns.

The Interim Report from the Equalities Review team has set out to:

  • provide an understanding of the long term and underlying causes of disadvantage that need to be addressed by public policy;

  • make practical recommendations on key policy priorities for: the Government and public sector; employers and trade unions; civic society and the voluntary sector; and,

  • inform both the modernisation of equality legislation, towards a Single Equality Act; and the development of the new Commission for Equality and Human Rights.

    NUS welcomes the Government’s initiative of undertaking research into the causes of inequality and reviewing the role of public policy in reducing disadvantage in society. However, along with other organisations, such as the 1990 Trust & the LGBT Consortium, NUS believes that the Report neither fulfils its stated objectives nor delivers analysis that will enable the tackling of structural inequality or systemic discrimination.
