LGBT Societies of the Year 2007
Thank you to all of the LGBT societies who entered this year – the standard of the work being carried out in students’ unions by and for LGBT students is testament to the hard work and passion of activists on the ground.
FE Society of the Year 2007
In the category of FE LGBT Society of the Year, the winning entrant impressed us with their activities in LGBT History Month, their commitment to integrating LGBT issues into the work of their students’ union, dedication to making their events accessible to disabled students, and for developing a national ‘Out in Sport’ Day to promote equality in sport. Congratulations to the winners of FE LGBT Society of the Year, Loughborough Students’ Union.
HE Society of the Year 2007
We would like to mention the achievements of some of the runners up in this section. Cambridge University Students’ Union should be congratulated for their work on trans inclusion and sexual health; as should Warwick Pride for working with the police to set up a hate crime reporting centre for their students.
Special mention should be given to Lancaster University LGBT for the innovative and wide ranging nature of their work this year – particularly in relation to LGBT History Month, campaigning and social events.
The winner of HE LGBT Society of the Year 2007 is Hope Pride - an LGBT society that has campaigned on Donation not Discrimination, Admission Impossible, oppression of the LGBT community in Uganda and disabled access on the scene. It has engaged in successful lobbying of its Primary Care Trust in relation to sexual health funding, and worked with its chaplaincy to support LGBT religious students. Finally, it has massively increased its membership this year, as a result of these activities, and much more.
