February is LGBT History Month!

This month, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans History Month is being celebrated across the UK for the third time. Last year’s LGBT History Month was a huge success and this year’ event, with your help, will build on that success. NUS LGBT campaign has produced an updated tool kit in order to provide you with the tools to make this LGBT History Month bigger and better than ever before.

Throughout the month of February, LGBT people will have the opportunity not only to proudly showcase our diverse and dynamic LGBT communities, but also to shed light on our once hidden history. There is another side to many of the well known stories in history, which deserves to be heard. So often LGBT people in the past have been rendered invisible – literally written out of history. LGBT History Month is our opportunity to change that.

LGBT History Month can be what you make of it. You could choose to hold a party to celebrate those LGBT figures of the past who have helped shape the world we live in today, or you could choose to spend some time reading about and researching an important moment in LGBT history. Whatever you decide to do, this pack is designed to help you make the most of the available resources as well as providing you with the tools and ideas to run your own LGBT History Month event. Don’t forget to register your event on the LGBT History Month website.

This year Sarah Weir, Executive Director of the Arts Council England, Cyril Nri, actor, director and writer, and Sir Ian McKellen, actor, are patrons of LGBT History Month. NUS LGBT joins with them in hoping LGBT History Month 2007 is a great success.

Have a fantastic LGBT History Month!

Scott Cuthbertson, LGBT Officer (Open place)
Claire Anderson, LGBT Officer (Women’s place)
