Government changes international officers' status
There are changes imminent in the status of international students who become sabbatical officers. This is following the introduction last week of the tiered points-system and a proposed change in the grading of international sabbaticals from ‘students’ to ‘skilled workers’. Potentially this leads to several issues around entitlement to time in the UK and extra bureaucracy within institutions and unions.
NUS has met with Bill Rammel and asked him to raise the issue with the Home Office to ensure international sabbaticals will remain considered as students. We are waiting on the outcome of this.
Any union which has elected an international student as a sabbatical officer should contact NUS for guidance and updates as the process for registering has changed.
