Welcome!
We are still pushing for a full time Internatinonal officer post provision within the NUS, but have also chosen to seriously address the issue of tuition fees and their extortionate increases annually by commisioning research into the status qou nationally and getting our facts right. We have also decided to focus on the lack of student representation and playing a influetintial role in the implementation of the pooints based immigration system for incoming students. We decided on a completly different apporach in terms of realising our campaign focuses and with a fresh and enthusiatic commmittee pushing the campaign, I rest assured that we will see some definite positive results for international students. Government changes international officers' statusAdded on 07/03/2008 There are changes imminent in the status of international students who become sabbatical officers. This is following the introduction last week of the tiered points-system and a proposed change in the grading of international sabbaticals from ‘students’ to ‘skilled workers’. Potentially this leads to several issues around entitlement to time in the UK and extra bureaucracy within institutions and unions. NUS has met with Bill Rammel and asked him to raise the issue with the Home Office to ensure international sabbaticals will remain considered as students. We are waiting on the outcome of this. Any union which has elected an international student as a sabbatical officer should contact NUS for guidance and updates as the process for registering has changed. The International Students' Campaign is updating its map of union provision for students from overseas. We need your help to do this and so, as a start point, we want to know if you're represented at all. With that in mind, we're asking one question - what sort of representation do you have in your union for international students? Click here to answer the question. Immigration law consultation document releasedAdded on 03/01/2008 Following a summer of consultation, the Border and Immigration Agency, part of the Home Office, recently released its paper on plans to simplify immigration law. The document aims to simplify immigration law for all who need to refer to, and use, immigration law. It is not to be confused with the points-based system and the changes it aims to bring about in terms of entry to the country and your visa status. The new document is about being able to easily understand and access and utilise immigration law for all concerned. Comments and questions are welcome and can be sent to International Students Officer Evita Situma.
