The Tenancy Deposit Protection Scheme for Students

A half day briefing for those involved in student housing: managers, advisers, student services and students' union staff and elected officers

Date: Monday, 15th January 2007 and Monday 22nd January

Duration: 1 Day

Venue: Eland House, London

The Tenancy Deposit Protection (TDP) scheme will affect those renting on Assured Shorthold Tenancies in England and Wales from 6th April 2007. Some 1,250,000 tenants with deposits collectively of more than £750m will be covered by the scheme. It is estimated that over 600,000 of those tenants will be students.

The TDP is a key part of the Housing Act 2004 provisions and is an important piece of new regulation. It aims to:

  • ensure tenants are informed about the scheme
  • guarantee the security of a deposit
  • speed up its return
  • ensure that where there is a dispute over a sum withheld that there is access to a dispute resolution system.

Any student renting on an Assured Shorthold Tenancy will be directly affected.

Educational establishments who collect deposits for those renting on AST's will also be affected and the TDP timescales will also set the benchmark for when all student tenants (including those living in institutional accommodation) will expect their money back.

This half day briefing brings you face to face with the DCLG staff charged with delivering this important piece of legislation. It will allow for questions and discussion on matters that refer particularly to the niche market of student accommodation.

The day will cover:

  • the scope of TDP and its cost
  • the custodial and insurance based options for suppliers
  • timescales and penalties for non compliance
  • the prescribed information required to tenants
  • the dispute resolution process.

The cost of this briefing has been kept deliberately low at £45.00 and has a maximum number of 70 places. This is a unique opportunity to talk directly to those framing the rules. The seminar includes a networking lunch for a supplement of £5.00 payable with the booking.

Places are expected to book VERY quickly and web bookings will take priority. Please do not book travel until we have confirmed your booking via post (which we will aim to do within 3 days).
