Protect the Human Week

pink 'protect the human' placardThrow a party…wear the badge and take action for Amnesty International’s Protect the Human Week - 14-20 October 2006

From 14 October, thousands of people all over the UK will be getting involved in Amnesty International’s Protect the Human week, to celebrate taking a stand against human rights abuses. Once again, we’re asking students to show their passion for human rights and throw a party, wear our badge and take action with Amnesty International. We are calling upon you to make this year’s Protect the Human week even bigger and better and bring us closer to getting 1 million new supporters standing up for humanity by 2010.

To make it easy to take part, we thought we’d help by giving students a party theme - the best live comedy the world has to offer. Amnesty International will be launching the week with a massive party of our own, the Secret Policeman’s Ball at the Royal Albert Hall. This groundbreaking live show on 14th October will feature the best names in comedy and music. It will be broadcast on Channel 4 on Sunday 22nd October, so why not hold a party to watch it? Or how about throwing a party with a comedy or music theme? Last year people held some fantastic parties, club nights, gigs and quizzes! Whatever you do, have a ball.

To raise funds at your party you can charge an admission fee and sell our Protect the Human badges. Our badge selling kit and other free party materials, including posters, invites and balloons, are ready to order. For all materials please order a Protect the Human week pack. It contains everything you need to know to organise your event plus forms to order materials and pay funds raised to Amnesty. To order the pack call 020 7033 1682 or email protect@amnesty.org.uk.

Please make sure people at your party take action by signing action cards on behalf of individuals at risk. Order them using the form in the Protect the Human pack and they’ll be sent out in early October. Amnesty hopes that over 25,000 will be requested again this year.

We hope you will join us in creating a massive buzz across the UK during Protect the Human week. Whatever you decide to do, you’ll not only have a ball but be raising money and taking action for Amnesty too. The perfect combination!

For more information on Protect the Human week and confirmation of the Secret Policeman’s Ball TV broadcast time visit www.amnesty.org.uk/protect. If you can’t do an event during the week, don’t let that put you off. You can continue to sell badges and hold events all year round. However, to win the top fundraiser prize and show your Student Union has the best social scene in the UK, remember to send in any money raised by 31st December 2006!
