Leading Diverse Students' Unions Seminar31st October - 1st November 2006 Yarnfield Park Training and Conference Centre Diversity is a major issue on the Government's and Universities' strategic agenda. Universities have been challenged by the government to address unequal patterns of access to Higher Education. The student movement has always aimed to be at the front of the equality agenda. Officers and managers are responsible, as leaders, for ensuring that within our own organisations is that we are diverse, truly reflecting our members in the opportunities we offer, the services we run, and as employers. Currently we are not. If we fail to address this, increasingly we will have diminishing relevance to students and without relevance, our legitimacy is called into question. At the same time the legislative landscape is changing. New legislation imposes a positive duty on public authorities to promote equality and eliminate discrimination. In recognition of the strategic centrality of this matter, this year's November seminar, hosted by NUS, AMSU and NUS Services, in conjunction with the Equality Challenge Unit is entitled Leading Diverse Students' Unions. It will include the formal launch of the AMSU diversity group's report and action plan. This event promises to be the event of the year and has attracted a dazzling array of major national speakers, ncluding; Waqar Azmi - Cabinet Office Nicola Dandridge - Chief Executive of the Equality Challenge Unit Professor Udiak Archibong - University of Bradford, Race Equality Champion Gemma Tumelty - NUS National President Trevor Phillips - Commission for Racial Equality Dr Ann Limb - Chair of Student Volunteering England; special adviser on diversity to the TUC and the Department of Education and Skills. Who Should Attend the Seminar? For this seminar, unions are invited to take up three places. The event is aimed at those in senior or leadership position in students unions including General Managers or Senior Managers Presidents / senior officers "Equality Champions". In advance of the seminar Unions are asked to appoint equality champions, likely to be senior staff, in a position to influence and drive the action plan within their own unions. For more information on Diversity Champions please see the attachment. Diversity Champions The Seminar will mix inspiration, information and practical sessions to equip organisational leaders to lead diversity action within their own unions.
