El Analfabeto’ (The Illiterate One) (1960 – Spanish with subtitles)

Starring Mario Moreno ‘Cantinflas’

One of the classic films by the legendary Mexican comedian and ‘social commentator’ Mario Moreno ‘Cantinflas’, Charlie Chaplin once described him as ‘the greatest comedian in the World’, and he is often referred to as the ‘Charlie Chaplin of Mexico’.

SUNDAY @ 1.30pm

The Motorcycle Diaries (Walter Salles, 2004)

Starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Rodrigo De la Serna

This beautifully scenic film is based on the memoirs of 23-year-old medical student, Che Guevara, and his friend Alberto Granada as they journey up the Andean spine of South America from their home in Argentina, to the northernmost tip of Venezuela, much of time aboard a cranky, oil-spewing motorcycle. With stunning imagery, this road movie is a rite-of-passage, and it proves crucial to the revolutionary politics of Guevara's next decade, when he transforms into the famed revolutionary who helps Castro win the Cuban Revolution.

SUNDAY 16 JULY @ 7.30pm

DENDE COLLECTIVE presents

Macunaíma in progress

Dende Collective’s project for 2007 will be Macunaima, an adaptation from the novel by Mário de Andrade. Here they will explore part of the play.

The Brazilian poet, novelist, musicologist and historian, widely regarded as the originator of ‘magic realism’ published Macunaima in 1928. The novel is about a man from an indigenous tribe in the Amazon who comes to Sao Paulo, immerses himself in urban life, learns the language and returns to the jungle. The novel explores the meeting of languages and cannibalism (the eating of cultures by other cultures), as a metaphor for colonisation. .

Dende Collective, a London-based company created in 1999, produces shows with a strong Brazilian flavour. Its productions, most recently Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands and Piranha Lounge (2004), were both shown at the Lyric, Hammersmith, and received glowing reviews:

“Astonishing international theatre of the highest calibre.” - WHAT'S
