Housing act brief for colleges

Further Education establishments, specialist Colleges and Private Higher Educational Institutions in England and Wales providing accommodation to their students will be affected by the forthcoming Housing Act. Institutions providing accommodation to their students through halls of residence or houses of five people or more, with three or more storeys, will have to comply to new regulations in April 2006. Also, a new risk assessment procedure, replacing the housing fitness standards, is being introduced and will cover all type of accommodation provided by colleges.

This one day briefing is hosted by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister in London, on the 18th of November. Co-hosts include NUS, Universities UK, the Association of Colleges, SCOP, ASRA, ANUK and Unipol. Lunch will be provided (to be confirmed).

The day will run from 10am to 3pm (to be confirmed).

During the day, we will look at the impact of the Housing Act 2004 on accommodation provided by further education establishments, with special consideration to the interaction with the Care Standards Act and the role of the Commission for Social Care Inspections.

NUS will lead a session on how the new legislation will affect students and elected student officers.

The delegate fee is likely to be quite low ( £25- to be confimed)
