NUS Bursaries and Scholarships Briefing
The Office for Fair Access is about to launch its first major report into the operation and impact of bursaries and scholarships in England in 2006/07.
This report, along with the announcement of an increase in the income thresholds for the undergraduate maintenance grant, will mean a close examination of such schemes in individual colleges and universities.
Students' unions must contribute to any institutional review, so that bursaries and scholarships benefit those students most in need and encourage those from the poorest backgrounds to go into higher education. NUS believes a national bursary scheme is the fairest way to ensure those students are supported, but in the meantime we have to concentrate on ensuring local schemes get better.
To help you in your campaigning the NUS Education Campaign has written a briefing for officers on Bursaries and Scholarships, outlining the background to the expansion of the schemes in 2006, the broad operation of bursaries and the principal campaign issues.
The briefing can be downloaded here.
If you have any questions, students who have had a bad experience of the bursary system or any news to share, please email NUS or inform your regional office. Good luck!
