Time to Get Equal Campaign

The NUS SWD Campaign is proud to be in partnership with the Time to Get Equal Campaign on the issue of disabled people and transport. Thousands of disabled people still experience discrimination when traveling. We demand an end to disablism on all public transport.

The overall aim of Time to Get Equal Transport is:

Ensure that all journeys on land can be fully accessible via public transport and pedestrian access, including physical access to all public buildings, and extend anti-discrimination legislation to cover air and sea transport. Ensure compliance with existing and forthcoming anti-discrimination legislation for transport and the built environment is monitored and non-compliance highlighted.

The objectives are:

  • Making disabled people's rights legal rights to transport and accessible environments a reality
  • Improving customer service and access for disabled people using goods, facilities and services
  • Extending legislation to cover air and sea transport and to remove the reasonable adjustment justification from transport infrastructure and public buildings.

What we are calling for:

Government to…

  • Lift the Disability Discrimination Act exemption that currently applies to air and sea transport.
  • Support the proposed EU regulation ‘concerning the rights of persons with reduced mobility when traveling by air’ to outlaw disablism against air passengers.
  • Open dialogue with the international community about disabled people’s right to accessible global air travel.

Airlines to…

  • Agree to comply with the current voluntary code of practice until this becomes a legal obligation.
  • Improve customer service and access by providing Disability Equality Training for all staff.
  • Involve disabled people in the design process for new aeroplanes and advise on reasonable adjustment to existing planes.

Aviation and airport authorities to...

  • Have due regard to the voluntary code of practice when licensing UK airlines.
  • Provide Disability Equality Training for all staff.
  • Ensure all UK airports comply with the Disability Discrimination Act 1995.
