Girl. Interrupted
01/10/2008

I do apologise that it’s taken me so long to write my first NEC blog. I’m not really a blogging person and with starting a new course, moving house, trying to find a job, preparing for countless fresher’s fairs and trying to actually deliver on manifesto pledges, this has kind of taken a backseat.

Anyway, it’s been a mad few months. I’ve seen the good (bright eyed and eager sabbs, campaigning work and representative structures getting off the ground), the bad (NEC meetings, wow!) and the ugly (York anyone?), but I’m gonna concentrate on the good because it makes me think happy thoughts.

I guess the two biggest things that I want to report are plans for the National Day of Action on student debt, and possible representative structures for London:

5 November – National Student Day of Action
Even though it’s my birthday that day (I know – how committed am I?), As an NEC member with responsibility for London, it gives me great joy that London was first off the mark when it came to planning what they wanted to do. The credit for that goes to the University of Arts London who I'm really glad are leading this. I’m not gonna give the game away as to what they are planning just yet but with UAL leading and it being London, you know that it’s gonna be big, creative, and we are gonna have a lot of fun doing it!

London Calling
There can be no denying that London is different. Housing a quarter of the NUS membership and with a mayoral office with unrivalled power, London students need to find a way forward. Currently at HQ, we are investigating how we best go about that. Those of you at the ULU (University of London Union) handover training weekend will have seen that our first attempts were a bit (!) confused. We are currently re-writing those so that commenting and getting involved will be a lot easier.

More info out next week.

As for me personally, the next few weeks are hectic, but hopefully I’ll see you on my travels:

  • 23/9 – Canterbury College Fresher’s Fair
  • 24/9 - University of Surrey Fresher’s Fair
  • 25/9 – UcCA Rochester Fresher’s Fair
  • 26/9 – University West of England Fresher’s Fair
  • 29/9 – NEC Meeting – University of Birmingham
  • 01/10 – Courtauld Institute Fresher’s Fair
  • 6/10 - NUS NEC Meeting – London
  • 7/10 - Pro choice Commons Debate – House of Commons
