Since before the summer the ‘students as consumers’ debate has been raging on. We discussed it over the summer on Action through Advocacy, it has been a main theme of many of the sector’s conferences this term and many of you, I know, are working on your own ‘student charters’.
Therefore I am really looking forward to the Students Rights: Consumer Rights? one-day conference that we are running on the 11 December 2007. This event will be an excellent opportunity for student officers and staff from the student movement to come together to discuss our approach to this ever-important issue.
It will also be our first opportunity as a movement to publicly question Lord David Triesman since he was announced as the ‘Minister for Students’ earlier this year.
This event will also see us launch the new NUS Student Charter and explore how you can locally use this as a tool to defend and extend students’ rights and oppose the introduction of student contracts on your campus.
As well as being an opportunity to delve into this most important issue, the event will provide you with an opportunity to catch up with others in the movement to discuss the many other important education issues of the day.

Looking forward to seeing you there
