Ha! Tricked you all! But now I’ve got your attention, let me tell you about a fantastic event which is taking place on September 15th at Manchester Students Union- our NUS Mental Health Network Day.
I thought I might as well take this opportunity to use my blog for a bit of a plug- Me and Sian are organising this event which we hope will be a really useful day for officers. I went to a similar one last year and as a new officer it really inspired and motivated me.
We are urging all officers to attend, not just SWD or welfare officers, because at the end of the day mental health issues affect us all. Its estimated that 1 in 4 people will suffer with mental health problems. When you put that in the context of how many of your students that is, its pretty mind-blowing.
This day aims to inform you about mental health issues that can; give you the confidence and skills to go off and change the way your institution treats people with mental health needs, and the way in which these needs are stigmatised.
It seems to me that increasingly officers and unions are becoming aware of the massive need to undertake work on mental health. It can be pretty tough trying to think up inventive ways to run eye-catching campaigns on the issue without scaring students off. Hopefully you will leave this day feeling confident in your knowledge and ability to run effective campaigns and work successfully with your institution.

Don’t miss it and book early to avoid disappointment,
Me and Sian will look forward to seeing you there!
