Hello,
Yes this is the first blog post xmas/New Year, and I did have a good kind of atheistic couple of weeks.
Anyway the point of this blog is about how human rights are being eroded away, and they are targeting our students first. As you may know I am proud to say human rights, and the preservation of human rights, is one of the key focuses on my ideology.
However, yesterday came about and the first thing I saw in The Guardian was that the government was planning to force students to have ID cards before they can get their loan. To quote the leak the statement said;
“We should issue ID cards to young people to assist them as they open their first bank account, take out a student loan, etc.”
Now the term “assist” is rather vague, I rather think of it in terms of “will make highly difficult” or “force.” I am completely against ID cards and I think we are getting into dangerous territory. It’s the development of the database state and we all know what happens to databases that are stored on CDs.
Any way, at present I am writing a model motion which will be put up in the Facebook group, as well as a letter for people to write to their MPs so they can register their total disgust at these actions.
Also, another highly worrying thing has been developing over the past few years. This is that the government wants lecturers to start spying on students and report any possible instances of extremism, or anyone displaying extremist characteristics. While I find it worrying that HT and the BNP are recruiting and present on our campuses, you don’t get rid of them by spying on people who are already suspicious of the state!
I hope everyone has had a good xmas and New Year. I will see many of you over the next couple of weeks at regional conferences and Disabled Students’ Conference.
As always give me a call 0797 356 632 or email me at tom.stubbs@nus.org.uk if you want to get in touch.
