With Christmas nearly upon us NUS is getting all festive with the daily mince pie emails and the NEC Secret Santa fun. But before we shut the doors of HQ and pack up to spend excruciating hours in front of the TV watching repeats I wanted to share with you what I have been up to in November since the National Day of Action on fees.
A extraordinarily fun EC1 - A tiring build up but a really good day of generally good debate, and a significant demonstration of the appetite for change, and the genuine recognition by many of the significant changes and feedback the NEC have taken on to make sure the reform proposals reflected the concerns people had. Speaking to delegates after I feel there is a real sense of desire to get on and make sure we get the job done so we and students unions can start focusing on the Higher education funding review.
Course rep conference - November also saw the first course rep conference held at UWE. Speaking about my experiences at LUU I was really impressed with what course reps present were up to, and enjoyed seeing the real progress that was being made to improve the quality of the student experience.
FE leadership - I got my first taste of FE training development programme and found it really useful to see the sheer variety and breadth of students unions in FE, and how much enthusiasm there was to build the capacity of the students unions present.
These are just some of the things I attended in November. I was also working on NUS’ Action for World AIDS day, preparing for the 60th Anniversary for the UN declaration of Human Rights, and publicising the National demo on Climate Change on the 6th December.
If you would like to be involved in the Society and Citizenship zone in NUS or want to know more about any of the work I have been doing as your NEC member you can email me on susan.nash@nus.org.uk
