| It’s a long time since I was stood up on that stage in Blackpool delivering a nerve-wracking election speech but as our induction took place earlier this month we’ve all been getting into full swing, and I’m getting more and more excited about the year ahead. As co-convenor of the Society and Citizenship zone I’ve been busy meeting many of our partner organisations. Dave and I have also been busy putting together plans of action for the zone based on policy passed at annual conference. But it’s not only been planning! Last week we had the opportunity to quiz the government minister; Baroness Morgan from DIUS on climate change. I led the meeting with a number of student officers to discuss sustainability in the sector, and student activism on climate change. I’m working on making these meetings a more regular feature so we can continue to raise your concerns on this issue, so watch this space! The past few months have included a whirl-wind tour of a number of campuses and even countries. Before I took office I was lucky enough to be part of a youth and student delegation to South Africa and Swaziland earlier in June which was organised by Action for Southern Africa. You can read more about my experience and the other NUS representative’s tales on the ACTSA website, and we should soon have the videos and photos up on officer online. Like I said at the start I have so much enthusiasm and hope for this year, and so if you want to chat about the zone or issues on your campus don’t hesitate to get in touch; email address is susan.nash@nus.org.uk, or just facebook me. Next week I shall be representing NUS at Climate Camp, so watch this space for more tales and tribulations of being on the block.
