Steven was elected to the National Executive Committee (NEC) of NUS as one of the twelve part-time Executive Members (the Block of 12) at Annual Conference 2006, Blackpool, on 30 March. He was elected onto the Block fifth and took up the position on 1 July 2006.

On the NEC, Steven is part of the Strong & Active Unions and Society & Citizenship campaign zones. He shares the NEC responsibility for Finance with Dave Charlesworth (Executive Member) meaning Steven and Dave, along with Gemma Tumelty (National President) and Joe Rukin (National Treasurer), are the NEC members who are part of Finance Committee.

In July 2005, Steven graduated from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, after four years of study with a BSc (Hons) in Actuarial Mathematics & Statistics. He studied on exchange for his third year at the University of Waterloo, in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

For 2005/06, Steven was President of Heriot-Watt University Students Association and prior to this he had held the positions of both Treasurer and Secretary. During 2005/06 he was also an NUS National Councillor (Scottish Rep).

Steven has been re-elected President of his students’ association for 2006/07 and will carry out this role in addition to being an NEC member. This position is a paid sabbatical post and Steven will therefore receive a salary throughout the year from Heriot-Watt University Students Association [NEC members must declare in their blog any financial payments that are non-NUS]

Steven lives in Edinburgh, where he was born and has been brought up. In his spare time, he enjoys watching DVDs (favourites include The West Wing; Have I Got News For You; Bremner, Bird & Fortune; Blackadder; 24; Lord of the Rings; Star Wars and so on…), backpacking, going to the cinema, playing and listening to music, surfing the web, doing bad impressions of Little Britain characters and singing karaoke to 80s and 90s icons like MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice and Will Smith.
