The “One Water” project has proved incredibly successful this year, capturing the imagination of lots of officers and students. Although many unions are starting to stock “One Water” we still need many more to if we are to start to really make a difference in Southern Africa.
Please find a model motion below, one which you can adapt to your own union to mandate you exec or officers to start stocking the water in all your bars and shops. Please also remember to speak to your University or Colleges and pressure them into selling it too.
When you drink ONE, Africa drinks too!
“One Water” Model Motion for Unions
This Union Believes:
- That millions of people across the world cannot access clean water
- That water of any kind is often inaccessible and difficult to obtain
- Many people use hand pumps that have been placed over boreholes or must walk miles in soaring heats just to obtain poor quality water.
- This chore usually falls on Women, young women and children
- That Trevor Field has developed the “Playpump” scheme which aims to provide cleaner, more accessible drinking water for people of Southern Africa
- So far over 800 “Playpumps” have been erected making a noticeable difference to the lives of thousands.
This Union further believes:
- “Playpump” is a practical, economic, creative and ethical way to provide FREE fresh drinking water to rural communities
- That this scheme provides playground activities for young children in the area, which in turn pumps water out, stopping the difficult and energy-sapping current pump systems.
- The pump can produce up to 1400 litres of water per hour
- That through donations, the “Playpump” scheme is able to drill further down into the ground thus ensuring cleaner, natural water.
- That money from the donations also ensures more pumps in closer regions to villages and townships.
- Supporters of the project include the United Nations, the World Trade Organisation and the National Union Of Students (NUS)
- That this project must continue to receive funding in order for it to reach out to other countries in Africa.
- “Playpump” foundation has developed a bottled water of which every penny goes to installing more “Playpumps”
- 9. NUS Services are now offering “One Water” to Student Union shops.
This Union resolves:
- For the Union executive to get “One Water” stacked on our shop shelves as soon as possible.
- To ensure that we are kept updated on the number of bottles sold.
- To give our full support to the project.
