| Between the horrific incidences in London I’ve been an extremely little busy block bee. Aside from the NEC work I’ve been doing and training I’ve been attending, I’ve also moved down to London and started my new job as an Outreach/Caseworker for the Camden town LGBT forum in Covent Garden. También estoy mirando para comenzar un curso español en la universidad de Lambeth en Spetember. Although it’s been busy, it has been an extremely positive month work-wise. Here is a run down of what I’ve been up to NEC Meetings Since taking Office (and before) I’ve attended all NEC meetings, most of which were productive, most of which were constructive and most of which were well observed and respected by all (shocking I know). I was given responsibility for Education, Student Union Development, Anti-Racism/Fascism and Affiliation. Summer training Just to backtrack a bit during June I attended ‘Manifesto to Action’ in the West Midlands. I think the event went really well and everyone seemed to enjoy the sessions and get a lot from the trainers and the NEC. It was nice for me as a West Midlander to catch up with old friends and meet new colleagues. Unfortunately I had to leave slightly early on the last day as it was my last official day as VP Student Development at Wolves. I left, to go and lead my team to victory at Laser Quest! It was really sad to leave Wolves in the end but especially to leave two dedicated and amazing student officer’s and friends Kim Carvey and Louise Jenkins. Since then I’ve also attended ‘Academic Appeals’ day at City University. Although Academic Appeals isn’t the sexiest of training topics the day was really fun and everyone seemed to learn a lot…including me! I’ve also been… - Working with the VP Education on an Anonymous Marking Campaign strategy for the year.
- Working with the VP on building collaborations for a ‘Votes@16’ campaign.
- Helping organise key-note speakers and trainers for sessions on ‘Out in Sport’.
- Attended the London bombings Vigil.
I hope that the Old hacks out there are beginning to recognise some of the work the Block of Twelve actually do. I know that along with myself ALL of my fellow block colleges are still extremely enthusiastic and motivated about the year ahead. We are all keen to prove to the membership the value of block members. As always any questions get in touch, Adiós, Stephen.
