This year we have 22 motions submitted to SWD Conference (ok that might not seen many to you but that actually is the most we have had submitted for a few years and if you look at the motions here I hope that you think that the motions are good.) 22 motions is actually a good number for NUS SWD campaign and hopefully means that people are starting to engage in the campaign and wanting to be involved.
But because so many motions have been submitted it means that the priority ballot has never been so important as it is now.
Priority Ballot you ask? What the hell is she on about now? Hasn't she got better things to do then blog about this- well yes I probably have but also I think that it is important to let you all know what the priority ballot is and it is important that you, the students and students' unions decide what we debate at conference rather than just the SWD Committee.
You see when there 22 motions submitted is means that there is no way in 2 days that we will be able to discuss them all- we will probably be able to discuss about 8 (and that is only if there are no amendments and no debate- which to be honest by the look of some of the motions isn't going to happen.) So YOU need to decide which are the motions that you definitely want to get discussed at SWD Conference by filling in the NUS SWD Priority Ballot form that has been sent to every Union in the last NUS mailing (ask your president- its probably floating around their desk!!!!)
You need to put number 1 by the motion you most want to get discussed and so on- and then send the form back to NUS HQ by Friday at 1pm!!!!! Yes that's a whole 3 days until the ballot closes so this needs to be done ASAP.
Because there have been so many motions submitted some of them will definitely fall off and therefore what happens next is that amendments are submitted to the motions. So when you are looking at the motions decide on the motions that you think more amendments could be added to and what motions would generate debate but also the motions that the NUS SWD Campaign needs to be working on. It is very important you decide this and decide on the priorities on the NUS SWD Campaign. We need you to be engaged in the democracy of NUS so go fill in that priority ballot form and send it back to NUS. If you have any questions drop give me a call or drop me an email.
Cheers
