Hello there- this isn't really a blog more a request for help. You see 1 in 10 young people in this country are meant to self-harm and I would love to know your thoughts. I sit on the national inquiry into young people (11-25 year olds) and self harm- go to
www.selfharmuk.org/ to find out more.
I am submitting a paper to the inquiry about self-harm in further and higher education and was wondering do people have any thoughts/ comments/ practises that they would like me to know of. It can be personal or on a professional level and don't need to be named. You might be reading this as a welfare officer and want me to know what happens at your institution, you might be reading this as a student who does self harm and want me to know your experiences- whatever the reason please do get in touch as the inquiry will feed into government and could have an impact upon policy on or a national campaign. The inquiry is the first of its kind in the country and a real chance for us to get things happening in FE and HE.
So to help you out have put down a couple of things I was thinking and would love your thoughts. Please email them to me at sian.davies@nus.org.uk by Monday August 1st at 1pm.
Do any Unions run self-harm self-help clubs or societies- what do people think of these?
How prevalent is self-harm in further and higher education?
What can we do to stop those students that do self-harm in FE & HE?
What support is needed?
Do we need to run a campaign to raise awareness amongst students/ staff etc.?
What is the attitude to self-harm in FE & HE? From lecturers, students, union officers, staff etc.
Thanks
Sian xx
