Ok so it’s the week after conference and stupid old me thought it might be all a bit quieter and calmer but oh no how stupid can I be? So here’s what I’ve been up to this week.
It started on Monday, which was a morning in the office before going off to Thetford to meet the new exec at UEA and to talk them about NUS, answer their questions about NUS policy and discuss different campaigns. The new team seems really active and motivated and it was great to meet them all.
Then on Tuesday it was a 730am train (early trains- you gotta to love them as a NEC member) to go to Wolverhampton University for their disability awareness week. So off I went trailing my pink suitcase full of info, leaflets and t-shirts for them. It’s great tat so many Unions have started to arrange disability awareness weeks and activities and I hope that they continue. A big well done to Helen, Ste, Lolly and others. It was whilst I was at Wolves I got a phone call from the Wright Show on Channel 5 saying that they wanted me to be on the show at 9am the next morning to talk about young people and suicide. Bearing in mind that they had only phoned me at 4pm and I was meant to be going onto Manchester for the next day. I decided to go as I feel it is good for NUS to be seen to be raising awareness of these things and also they were paying the train fare! So after meeting Dan Anderson from Wolves College to talk about the FE Priority Campaign it was back to Helen’s for a few glasses of wine and a couple of hours kip before I had to get a train at 6am. Ouchie ouch!!!
So Wednesday kicked off with the Wright show- have to admit that I didn’t think that I was going to speak for a bit- but luckily I did and hopefully what I said was useful and then guess what it was onto another train heading up to the North West Time To get Equal Campaign (www.timetogetequal.org.uk). I met James from SWD committee to talk about the swd/lgb day and the campaign activities for the next year before we headed off to the launch. It was all a bit formal but we made some good contacts and we want to get students in the North West involved- it is events like this that really get me motivated though and make me realise how far we’ve got to go before disabled people achieve true equality in our society. The event finished late so it was time for another bed in another town.
Thursday it was a day in HQ sorting out emails, congratulating Maria on SWD committee who had just been elected to Mature students committee- a huge huge well done- I know that you’ll be awesome. I also spent some time working on the nus swd priority campaign for next year as well as the next swd committee meeting. HQ was all a bit hectic because of the block count and a huge congrats to the 12 peeps who got elected- do you know what you have let yourselves in for!!! Then it was off home- yes I actually spent a night in my own bed.
Friday was working from home but I also met Adam from swd committee to talk about committee stuff and plans for the next year as well as the Bournemouth University Diversity Day.
Saturday and Sunday I actually had off and was spent sleeping cause conference and all that travelling had tried me- so another ‘quiet’ week in your swd officer’s life was over. And in the words of Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz there is no place like home!
