I have had such a good day and have just attended one of the best events ever in my time within NUS so a big well done to the Women’s Campaign and Jo Salmon (www.officeronline.co.uk/blogs/josalmon/).
I am on the way home after attending the Pro Choice and Proud of it day in London and it was awesome. There were some really good speakers and some really thought provoking discussions. The day really made me realise how much more liberating women need and how scary it is that people what to take away women’s right to choice. I can not believe that in the 21st century some countries might go back to laws that are so out of date and that will make abortion be a dirty word that is done in the back streets. How can people really justify taking away women’s right to choice what they do with their bodies????
The day also really demonstrated the need for the liberation campaigns and the women’s campaign and how far we have still got to go. People might believe that women in the 21st century are equal but today showed that there are still so many areas that we need to be campaigning on and we have so much left to do. It was really inspiring.
And the day finished on a great note- showing how well all the 4 liberation campaigns are working together this year- because when Jo’s event finished us all went outside parliament to participate in the MIND Candlelight Vigil outside parliament (www.mind.org.uk). About 100 activists came together to demonstrate their concerns about the Government’s proposed mental health legislation. It was great that at least 20 of those were students and really demonstrated the campaigning work that you have all been doing on SWD issues.
This was just a quick blog to say a huge well done to Jo and a big thank you to all those who turned out for the vigil. It was great to see you there.
