There is something in the air
There is something in the air- can you feel it? Maybe you’ve heard or seen it??? Yes it is that time of year- when suddenly you’ll start getting phone calls- people you’ve not spoken to in ages will get in touch or people who you have never spoken to will suddenly phone you up for a bit of a chat and some bant.
Yes it is NUS Election time when some decide to try and get on the NEC, some gossip about who is going to get elected to the NEC and others are wondering who is the NEC and why are they suddenly getting in touch now?
Ok all joking aside I can remember as an officer how annoyed I got at this time of year (especially after the 5th or 6h hey how are you doing- I was just phoning to say happy new year & was wondering….) but also I have been through the whole NUS election process myself. And to be honest I found it hell.
I hated the fact that I had to ask people for their nominations, cringed when I said would you support me. It is not a fun process and it’s bloody hard work. You feel all a bit egoistical as you try and convince people that you are the best person for the job.
All in all elections as some of you know and others will want to find out can be the best and the worst of times. But do remember that it can take a lot to stand up and want to change things, quite a bit of guts to say and put your values on the line, let them be questioned and talked about. And whilst I know how annoying those phone calls can get I also know how time consuming and cringe making it can be. And as much as you don’t like being asked there is probably someone on the other end of the phone who probably doesn’t like asking. But that is the way of NUS democracy- that is the way of NUS elections. So maybe question and criticize the process rather than those standing.
If you want it to change nominate those you believe will change the system as it is.
And when and if you do get that hey how are you doing phone call ask questions, find out what people are standing, find out about their fractions, ask to be sent their manifestos and how no guilt if you want to nominate someone else.
