The month that was…and the day that usually isn’t
06/03/2008

It’s 29 February and apart from being an important day for one of my mates, he’s officially seven today (a prize to the person who can tell me first how that works), its also the close of nominations for the two LGBT officer positions, there are still a good few hours to go but I know already that this year’s conference is going to be one of the most interesting yet, all of the candidates (that I know of), are talented and its reassuring to know that whatever happens, next year the NUS LGBT Campaign will be in safe hands. Anyways I’m not going to deluge into elections on my blog – it’ll be for you to decide which candidates to support.

Elections aside, February has been one of the busiest months ever in the diary of the LGBT Campaign. From a facebook bursting with event invites to the many, many requests we received from you to speak, demonstrate, campaign, even get arty – LGBT History Month 2008 has been a truly amazing one.

I won’t share all the highlights as there are too many but thanks go to everyone who worked so hard to make this year so good, thanks for the thousands of postcards signed, petition signatures received, debates had and most importantly hearts won. Thanks to the guy in Cardiff who called me stupid for advocating Donation not Discrimination, thanks to those of you who have taken ‘Love without Borders’ and made it your own, and to those who stood out in the cold lobbying your institutions, telling them bullying sucks.

LGBT History Month is so important to our community because of the decades, centuries even, of repression, discrimination and sheer invisibility of LGBT people thought history. It’s our chance to stand tall and showcase our movement at its very best. Please send us your photos, write to us and tell us how your events went and let us know how your campaigns went. We’re always interested.

And finally as my friend James Chick from Derby reminded me, LGBT is for life – not just for February. Please keep up the good work!
