Responding to actions at Extraordniary Conference 2
As a National Executive Committee it is vital that we uphold the policies of our National Union and set an example to all delegates at all of our events. The events that happened at the Second Extraordinary Conference saw members of the National Executive committee breach some of our policies and so in an effort to hold ourselves to account and following a mandate from Disabled Students Conference I produced the following letter to those concerned and asked for a response to all which we also hope will be blogged
If you have any questions over this the drop me a line
Cheers,
Bubble
Dear NEC member,
I am writing to you in relation to Extraordinary Conference 2 in January, and the role you played in the stage protest on the day.
On Wednesday the NEC discussed the some of the issues, and in particular discussed a motion passed at Disabled Students Conference on the protest. The motion and discussion at NEC was careful to separate the question of the political issues raised by the protest in relation to the NEC position on Gaza from the accessibility issues that the protest generated for delegates and members of the NEC.
The motion argued that the protest led to Conference becoming inaccessible and also argued that the actions were a breach of the NUS Safe space and the equal Opportunities policies.
As a National Executive Committee, we have a collective leadership role to play in ensuring that all policies of NUS are upheld and should set the example to the membership and all other delegates. The fact that your actions compromised this policy is not acceptable.
As a result we ask that through a suitable statement, you issue a full apology for this breach of the NUS Equal Opportunities and Safe space policies.
I look forward to your response,
Richard Budden
National Secretary
On behalf of the NEC
