Mature Students Conference is coming up on 28-29 April in Coventry and is a chance for unions to come and participate in debate, discussion and education about the issues that face mature students on campuses up and down the country.
As a group, mature students are often left out and overlooked in students’ union life – be that through personal choice or, more importantly, because they possibly feel like the union is not something they belong to. With the changing demographic in Higher and Further Education where mature students are increasing in number year on year, unions have to work out ways to involve mature students within their structures and within everyday students’ union life. Be it through forums, groups, societies or officer positions mature students must have representation and contact with your students’ union and a voice within the National Union.
The current issue of cuts in government funding for equivalent or lower qualifications (ELQs) will hit mature students hardest; those wishing to grab a second chance at learning, or change their career path. It is a shameful move by the government and it is issues such as this that highlight how much we must support our under-involved students and ensure they are not left marginalised.
Mature Students Conference allows unions to send up to four delegates to come and take part in the debate and workshops on things such as ‘Involving mature students in your union’. You do not have to be a mature student to attend and we actively encourage union officers who will be working on mature student issues throughout the upcoming year to come along with mature student representatives.
Registration is now open so please book early and make a real difference.
