| I spent 3 days in Wolverhampton with the Regional Organisers and Organising Managers in an attempt to work out how we as NUS move towards the Organising culture and create a new generation of activists on our campuses. Karl Roper, Director of the TUC Organising Academy, was our tutor and took us through various training materials and worksheets to give us a sense of what we were up against in learning to organise. For me, it was very interesting to learn about the different Trade Union models and how we can adapt these to make them work for us and our members! It is hoped that after all the brainstorming, discussions and flipchart that was filled out a presentation can be made at the next NEC to adopt this new strategy that has been collated and we can move forwards on starting the small steps towards an organising culture and move away from discussing our bars and commercial services, and the servicing culture we currently are in. The key question is though how does it benefit us and our students on campus? Well from what has been learnt these steps mean that we can have involved activists moving our Unions forwards and higher involvement in our campaigns and the way that we and Unions function. How beneficial would it be to have a group of students to contact every time you are running a campaign that can pass on the message of what you are doing to students on campus where you take the information to them rather than them having to hunt it out themselves. It is time to get organised and make that shift on our campuses and within NUS itself, I would urge you to check out the TUC Organising Academy or get in touch with me bubble@nus.org.uk or your Regional Offices. Cheers, Richard ‘Bubble’ Budden
