Richard was elected to the ‘Block of 12’ at the National Conference 2006 as a member of Labour Students. During 2005-06 Richard has been President of the University of Birmingham Guild of Students (known as Bugs) while also the NUS National Council Rep for the West midlands, consequently serving on the “Year of Change” group that led reform in the organisation.

Before this Richard was President of his Halls’ Resident’s Association, founder of the Fairtrade Society – getting Birmingham to become the second campus to get fair-trade university status – and the Labour Club. Richard was a trustee and then additionally Vice Chair (Finance) of the British Youth Council from 2002-05. Before this he served as Chair of Leighton-Linslade Youth Forum – opening a £92,000 skate park – Member of the Youth Parliament for Bedfordshire and Chair of his school council that raised £6,700 in their RAG week, created a ‘Students as Researcher’ project and got the Student Council – a budget, representation on the Board of Governors and the involvement of students in all staff interview processes.
