We are researching the potential and development of the NUS Card with a view to maximising value and benefits accrued by Students’ Unions and student members. The long-term future of the NUS Card is far-reaching and full of possibility and it is important we engage with our Membership on this issue in a transparent and democratic way. I have therefore attached a comprehensive briefing into the future of the NUS card incorporating research undertaken to date by the NUS Card working group.
The Briefing details potential steps to encapsulate the vision and values of NUS in the NUS Card identity, to work towards the financial stability of Student Unions and student members and create beneficial foundations for the future. From the potential link to on-campus trading, the collaboration with University bodies to create a 'one campus card', the harnessing of competitor activity and the re-acquisition of all students on campus, the opportunity for development is exciting. Ideas to modernise the NUS Card via a technological platform to act as a portal to other services have also been discussed and should not be ignored in considering what the NUS Card could achieve.
As NUS Treasurer I have outlined the potential development of the NUS card in accordance with the current and future financial climate of Student Unions and student members. The introduction of tuition fees and the threat of competitor activity with the commercialisation of universities should be considered as a backdrop to the future life of the NUS Card for example.
Now is a key time to look strategically to the future, to strengthen the NUS Card brand identity, to work together to prioritise our aims and objectives and facilitate the delivery of our long-term aspirations.
Following on from this letter, you will receive an email in January asking for your response to the NUS Card Briefing. This will be in the form of an e-survey. I cannot stress how important your input will be to this process. Please make sure you fill in the survey when you receive it in January. The proposal will then be forwarded to National Conference in April where the democratic vote will decide the Card's future.
I very much look forward to receiving and reading your responses. If you have any questions or queries you may visit officeronline.co.uk, amsu.net and nussl.co.uk or contact me personally on martin.ings@nus.org.uk
