Steve Wright is the man who has now been convicted for killing five young women in Suffollk in 2006 - he will be spending the rest of his life in prison.
It is devastating is that Wright's "campaign of murder" is so reminiscent of the terror that Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper, brought when he was at large killing several women in the 1970s which begs the question - how far has our society come over 30 years?
NUS Women's Campaign sends its deepest condolences to the families and friends of Gemma Adams, Tania Nicol, Anneli Alderton, Paula Clennell and Annette Nicholls.
And we also wish to utterly condemn voices such as the Daily Mail's Richard Littlejohn who assert that the murders of these women are somehow less important than other murders because the women involved worked as prostitutes. Littlejohn actually wrote: "in the scheme of things the deaths of these five women is no great loss. They weren’t going to discover a cure for cancer or embark on missionary work in Darfur. The only kind of missionary position they undertook was in the back seat of a car."
These comments are a disgrace, and are sadly not the only ones like this that have been published during the coverage of this tragic crime spree.
NUS Women's Campaign is campaigning to end violence against women, and to end hatred of sex workers and all women.
