Freshers Flu!
Officially the worst thing about being a fresher! I’m currently in NUS HQ on Holloway Road after recovering from having the notorious freshers flu... I never knew that I could feel so rough purely because of a big cold. However it is an experience that I shall note down as a valuable one and one I am going to avoid at all costs. In fact I could leave the country next time... how lovely would that be? Spain... Italy... Cornwall would do.
Now I’ve had my moan about Freshers Flu I can now go into the more important things like what I had for lunch, no seriously... We are currently in the run up to our winter conference and the clogs are turning, minds are ticking and inspiration is about (somewhere.) It’s that time of year again the time where everyone meets everyone else. It’s the time that you get the flashes of inspiration from first time delegates, the place where you make friends for life and most importantly it’s where our campaign comes to life. LGB Conference isn’t just about motions it’s everything about the whole process – the debates and the late night conversations. The reason I love conference is because there is no other place, that I have seen, where you can have so many people being so passionate about so many issues. You even see people that claim not to be political fighting for what they believe in.
So as you can guess I’m quite excited about conference but there are also a number of exciting things going on in my life. I’ve just started a degree at DeMontfort Uni in Youth and Community Development and I love it! I love being a student full time and it does make a change from working in NUS. Sometimes it may seem that I’m very hyper and enthusiastic about everything but I really do enjoy being a student I love learning I love the debates after lectures in the pubs. I suppose I just like being a student plain and simple. I thought for along time that I wouldn’t be able to afford Uni and that I would be denied the chance to get into Higher Education and now I’ve got the chance there ain’t no way I’m screwing it up.
In September I moved into my new flat in Leicester and I was bitterly disappointed that yet again I had a landlord/lady that seems to think that you can walk over students. The price of student accommodation is getting higher but the quality in most places is getting lower. This annoys me. I’ve lived in three student houses and only one of my landladies/lords has treated my housemates and me as human beings. I don’t mind doing all the cleaning but (for example) I’m not quite qualified to put in a double glazed window in that’s falling off the wall two floors up. So if you have problems with your accommodation please go to your SU, complain and if nothing changes complain some more! (not that I’m the complaining type!)
There’s a couple of other good things that have happened like all the new people I’ve meet but I’m afraid other than moving starting Uni and NUS work I’m quite boring. I haven’t been out at all (Ok that’s a lie and I’ve not exactly been the shy and retiring type at uni but I’m sure that will be another story for another time!)
My Quote of the month...
"You can't type what a lesbian is. We're anything and everything. The one thing in common is that we make love to other women. So give up trying to limit us." Amanda Bearse, actor, television director
